Media and the Mirror: What Low Confidence Reveals About America

Trust, like glass, once broken is slow to mend. In the United States, that fragile relationship between citizens and the media has thinned to one of its weakest points in modern history.

According to a recent Gallup poll, only 31% of U.S. adults say they have a “great deal” or “fair amount” of trust in newspapers, television, and radio to report the news fully, accurately, and fairly. The figure places public confidence in the press near its lowest recorded levels, continuing a long decline that stretches back from the high-water mark of nearly 70% in the 1970s.

Generational differences highlight the divide. Adults under 50 express markedly less confidence in the media than older generations. Just over a quarter of younger adults say they trust the news, compared with more than 40% of Americans over 65. Analysts note that the widening gap reflects not only shifting media consumption habits but also the polarisation of information ecosystems in the digital age.

The erosion of trust has consequences that ripple beyond journalism itself. When audiences doubt the press, debates over public policy, elections, and even science become more contested. For newsrooms, the challenge lies in rebuilding credibility in an environment where partisanship and social media amplify scepticism.

Yet, even in decline, trust is not extinct. Millions of Americans continue to rely daily on established media for fact-based reporting. The question that remains is whether the industry can bridge the distance between a sceptical public and its own mission to inform — or whether the trust gap will grow into a lasting fracture.
