A local mayor in central Mexico was shot dead inside a town hall in Temoac, in the state of Morelos, after he had survived an assassination attempt in January, authorities said. Forensic experts and police found Valentin Lavin’s body at local government facilities, and the state prosecutor’s office said an operation to arrest those responsible was underway. The town is near Mexico City, a region where drug cartels are active. Mexico has seen nearly 100 mayors murdered since 2006.
