Masterpiece Heist: $10M Worth of Renoir Paintings Stolen from French Museum

CAGNES-SUR-MER, France — A daring early-morning burglary at the Renoir Museum on the French Riviera has left the cultural world reeling after thieves made off with three original paintings by Impressionist master Pierre-Auguste Renoir, valued at an estimated €9 million ($10 million). Authorities have launched a sweeping regional manhunt as specialized art crime investigators secure the historic estate.

The breach occurred shortly before sunrise at Les Collettes, the estate where Renoir spent the final years of his life until his death in 1919. According to municipal authorities, the museum's silent alarm was triggered at 5:48 a.m. local time after two individuals forcibly entered the building.

The perpetrators acted with rapid precision, cutting the canvases directly from their frames. Security cameras captured the suspects seizing four works from the collection. However, as municipal police units arrived within five minutes of the alarm, the fleeing suspects dropped one of the stolen canvases in the museum gardens during their escape, fleeing into the surrounding grounds with three remaining masterpieces.

"Attacking the Renoir Museum is attacking a part of the history and heritage of Cagnes-sur-Mer," declared Mayor Bryan Masson in a statement following the incident. "These events are particularly serious, and both municipal and national law enforcement is fully deployed to track down the perpetrators."

The Sub-Directorate for Combating Organized Crime and Specialized Delinquency has taken charge of the inquiry alongside regional judicial police. Forensics teams spent Tuesday sweeping the museum grounds, where evidence—including discarded bags and discarded tools—was recovered for DNA and fingerprint analysis.

The site, which opened as a museum in 1960 and houses a priceless collection of Renoir’s original paintings, sculptures, and personal artifacts, remains closed to the public indefinitely while security protocols undergo a full audit.

Art market experts and cultural heritage organizations have expressed deep concern over the theft, warning that high-profile Impressionist works are virtually impossible to sell through legitimate auction houses or private galleries. Officials speculate the pieces may have been stolen to order for a private collector or could be used as collateral in illicit underground networks, prompting Interpol to circulate high-resolution imagery and detailed descriptions of the missing artwork across international border control databases and art registries worldwide.
