Massive Wildfire Sweeps Through Greek Coast, Forcing Evacuation Of Tourist Towns, Destroying Homes Across Peloponnese

Patras, Greece— Flames came down the hill toward the sea on October 30, 2026. A fast-moving forest blaze fanned by strong winds and dry conditions forced mass evacuation of tourist coastal towns near Patras and on the islands of Chios, Zakynthos and Kefalonia, burning hotels, homes and farms and closing beaches. Thousands of residents and tourists were moved.

Firefighters were battling relentless wildfires for a second consecutive day, according to local reports. Thousands of evacuees from towns near Patras and coastal areas on Chios were moved to shelters. In Halkidiki in northern Greece, tourists and residents fled villages by land and sea on Thursday as a wildfire engulfed houses near a resort during peak holiday season. People wearing face masks, some clutching children or pets, boarded dinghies in Siviri as smoke turned the sky dark gray.

Kathimerini said major fires were encroaching on Lagonisi near Athens and Loutraki, about one hour west of the capital. Metropolitan Athens and most of southern Greece were on the second-highest alert level. Reuters reported tourists fleeing a Greek wildfire hitting a resort, with Croatia also fighting blazes. The coast guard said more than 300 people were evacuated by sea in some areas. Firefighters evacuated 254 people by sea from Agios Vasileios on Friday and 12 from Porto Germeno on Saturday — an escape route of last resort.

In a seaside resort on Lesvos, a forest fire forced evacuation of Vatera, a five-mile beach stretch, destroying several homes and businesses. Mayor Taxiarchis Verros said the blaze erupted early and spread fast. More than 150 fires were reported nationally in recent days, with six areas on high alert. The Ministry of Climate Crisis and Civil Protection issued over a dozen evacuation orders.

The friction is tourism and terrain. Greece's coastal towns are built into pine forests that burn fast in summer. Tourist hotels are at the end of narrow roads with one exit. When wind shifts, fire cuts the road and the only way out is by sea. Authorities are particularly concerned about Porto Germeno, a seaside community on the Gulf of Corinth, where access is limited.

Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis was briefed on the operation. Fire officials said 150 firefighters were battling blazes near Patras, with aircraft making water drops over Ionian islands. In 2018, flames fanned by strong winds devastated Mati, killing 60 in Greece's worst fire disaster in a decade. Most were tourists who could not find refuge. That memory drives early evacuation now.

As of October 30, 2026, fires were still burning near Patras and on Chios, with flames close to homes on Kefalonia. The national forecast said fires would continue despite a drop in temperatures to 35C from above 40C earlier in the week. Coastal roads remained closed.

Boats were still shuttling people off beaches.
