Massive Sinkhole Swallows Two Vehicles in Central Mexico, Killing One, Injuring Three, Blocking Major Road

Puebla, Mexico— A massive sinkhole opened without warning on a road in central Mexico Thursday, swallowing two vehicles, killing one person and injuring three others as the pavement collapsed beneath them.

The incident happened around 9:15 a.m. local time on a state highway outside Puebla city, according to El Universal and civil protection officials. A pickup truck and a sedan were driving over a section of road that had been patched twice in the past year. Witnesses said the asphalt cracked, then dropped several meters in seconds.

One driver, a 42-year-old man, was pronounced dead at the scene after his vehicle fell nose-first into the pit and was crushed by falling earth and concrete. Three others were pulled out by bystanders before emergency crews arrived. Two were taken to hospital with fractures, one with minor injuries. The hole measured roughly 10 meters wide and 8 meters deep.

"The road just disappeared," a bus driver who stopped behind the collapse told local media. "We heard a loud boom, dust came up, and the cars were gone. We thought it was an earthquake."

Officials said recent heavy rains had eroded underground drainage and softened soil beneath the roadbed, a common problem in the region where limestone and loose volcanic soil mix. The state water authority said a leaking sewage pipe may have accelerated erosion, creating a cavity that the road surface concealed until it failed. Residents said they had reported a depression forming in the road two weeks ago.

The highway was closed in both directions, cutting a key link between Puebla and Tlaxcala and causing a 12-kilometer backup. Heavy cranes were brought in to lift the vehicles, but work was halted at midday after engineers detected further movement at the edges of the hole. Geologists were called to assess whether the cavity extended under adjacent lanes.

Mexico's infrastructure agency said it would audit similar road sections across the state. Sinkholes have become more frequent in central Mexico as urban expansion overloads aging drainage systems and groundwater extraction destabilizes subsoil. Last year, a similar collapse in the same municipality swallowed a house.

Prosecutors opened an investigation into possible negligence in road maintenance. The municipality said repair crews had filled the depression with asphalt last week, but had not inspected what was underneath.

The pit remained open at nightfall, with police tape around it and headlights of stuck traffic stretching behind.
