Massive Sinkhole Opens In Guatemala City, Swallowing Homes, Collapsing Highway After Torrential Overnight Downpour

Guatemala City, Guatemala— The ground opened at 2:15 a.m. on October 30, 2026. After hours of torrential downpour, a massive sinkhole tore through a residential block in Zone 6 of Guatemala City, swallowing two houses, a pickup truck, and a 40-meter section of roadway that connects to the Inter-American Highway. Neighbors heard a roar, then silence.

Prensa Libre said the hole was at least 30 meters wide and more than 60 meters deep, unstable at the edges. CONRED, the national disaster coordinator, ordered an immediate evacuation of 28 homes around the rim. Emergency crews could not enter at first because the walls kept crumbling. One man was reported missing after the initial collapse.

This is not new for Guatemala City. In May 2010, Tropical Storm Agatha triggered a 60-foot-wide, 30-story-deep sinkhole that swallowed a three-story factory. In 2007, a similar 330-foot-deep hole opened in the same zone. Geologists blame a mix of pumice fill, fractured limestone, and a leaking drainage system that erodes from below during heavy rain.

Residents said they had warned about leaks. "Water was coming up from the street for weeks, we called the municipality," said a neighbor evacuated from the block, standing behind police tape. Officials said a main collector pipe may have failed under pressure from saturated soil. AFP noted the Inter-American Highway was washed out in sections during past storms, closing transport for days.

By midday October 30, CONRED had set up a perimeter and brought in geotechnical engineers. The highway section remained closed. Bus routes were diverted. Families who lost homes were taken to a municipal shelter in Zone 5. No official death count was released, but three people were treated for injuries from falling debris.

The political friction was immediate. Opposition council members said the capital's drainage network has not been fully mapped. The mayor's office said it had invested in repairs after the 2010 event, but heavy rains overwhelm old concrete. Engineers said the hole could grow if rain continues.

Torrential rain from a tropical system sitting over Central America had already killed at least three people earlier this week in a landslide that swept six homes into a river in the capital. That slide left 15 missing, including 10 minors, according to local reports. The sinkhole added a second front to the emergency.

As of October 30, 2026, drones were circling the hole, measuring expansion. Crews were pumping water from the surrounding streets. Residents in adjacent blocks were told not to return. The highway authority said it would take days to assess whether the roadbed can be rebuilt.
