Massive Sign Collapse Leaves 1 Dead and 6 Injured at West Sussex Christian Event

WEST SUSSEX, UK — A summer weekend intended for worship and community turned into a scene of tragedy on Friday afternoon, August 28, 2026 after a massive signage structure collapsed at the Big Church Festival in Wiston Park, near Steyning. The sudden collapse resulted in the death of a 41-year-old man and left at least six other attendees injured.

Emergency service crews, including police officers, South East Coast Ambulance units, and critical care paramedics, responded to reports of a fallen structure.

Despite rapid medical intervention on-site, authorities confirmed that the 41-year-old victim, a resident of Eastbourne, succumbed to his injuries at the scene. His next of kin have been informed and are receiving support from specialist officers. Six other festivalgoers were transported to regional hospitals for treatment.

The Big Church Festival, recognized as the UK’s largest Christian music and worship gathering, was scheduled to run through Sunday with tens of thousands of visitors expected.

Following the incident, organizers halted the event, ordering day visitors to vacate the grounds immediately. By late Friday evening, management confirmed that the remainder of the festival had been officially cancelled.

In a statement released shortly after the tragedy, festival organizers expressed profound heartbreak:"We are devastated by the serious incident that took place at Big Church Festival today, in which a sign fell, injuring at least seven people, one of whom tragically lost their life. First and foremost, all of our thoughts are with those who have been affected, their families and friends, and everyone who witnessed what happened."

Sussex Police, alongside the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) and local authorities, have launched a formal investigation into the structural failure. While investigators have not yet determined the exact cause of the collapse, regional weather services had previously issued warnings regarding strong wind gusts across West Sussex during the afternoon.

Detective Chief Superintendent Richard McDonagh spoke on the distress caused to those in attendance and urged witnesses to come forward: "This is a tragic incident and our thoughts go out to the man's family and friends at this incredibly difficult time... We know there were thousands of people at the festival and we're urging anyone with any information, or any relevant video footage, to please come forward."

Authorities continue to secure the site as structural safety reviews and multi-agency inquiries proceed.
