SHANGHAI, CHINA — In a major showcase of its expanding commercial space capabilities, China successfully launched the Gravity-1 Y4 carrier rocket on Wednesday morning, July 22, 2026. The heavy-lift commercial vehicle successfully deployed a payload of nine satellites into their pre-designated orbits during a precision maritime launch.

The Gravity-1 Y4 rocket blasted off at exactly 10:54 a.m. local time (02:54 UTC) from a mobile sea-launch platform stationed in the waters east of the Shanghai metropolitan area. The mission was orchestrated by the Taiyuan Satellite Launch Center.

According to state media reports and developer OrienSpace, the rocket performed flawlessly, executing its flight path over the East China Sea before precisely deploying all nine onboard satellites. This mission marks the third successful flight for the Gravity-1 carrier rocket series, following its record-breaking maiden sea launch in January 2024.

Aerospace officials highlighted the launch as a key validation of China's sea-based deployment systems, noting that mobile maritime platforms offer commercial space companies significant operational advantages.

First, they provide enhanced trajectory flexibility by allowing operators to position the launch pad at optimal coordinates to maximize payload efficiency. Second, they greatly improve public safety by significantly reducing the risks associated with spent rocket stages falling near populated inland areas. Finally, these ocean-going platforms enable an increased launch cadence, bypassing busy terrestrial spaceports to allow for more frequent commercial missions.

The nine-satellite payload consists of a diverse mix of commercial and research assets, including the Dongpo-13, Dongpo-14, Dongpo-17 through Dongpo-20 series, alongside the Xiguang-2 01, Tianyi-49, and Lilac-3 satellites.
