Massive Industrial Fire in South Haven Sends Towering Plume of Black Smoke Skyward

SOUTH HAVEN, Mich. — A massive industrial fire broke out at the East Jordan Plastics plant on Stieve Drive, sending a towering plume of thick black smoke into the sky visible up to 40 miles away across Southwest Michigan.

The blaze ignited outside the facility among thousands of outdoor plastic pallets before quickly spreading, triggering propane tank explosions that launched debris high into the air. Multiple regional emergency agencies rushed to the scene to combat the third-alarm fire. All plant personnel evacuated the premises safely, and officials confirmed that no injuries were reported.

Due to the fire's close proximity to a primary electrical substation and utility transmission lines, power was shut off as a safety precaution, leaving roughly 7,400 customers across South Haven without electricity. The outage disrupted local operations, forcing the city to temporarily close the Dyckman Avenue Bascule Bridge and leading South Haven High School to cancel its Friday evening homecoming festivities. Power has since been restored to the community following extensive repairs by utility crews.

Environmental regulators, including the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy (EGLE), were notified to monitor regional air quality impacts resulting from the heavy toxic smoke. Investigators are working to determine the precise cause of the initial ignition.

Local business leaders and city officials met over the weekend to assess the economic impact on the surrounding industrial corridor, assuring residents that municipal emergency systems remained resilient throughout the crisis. Preliminary reports indicate that structural damage was largely contained to the facility's exterior storage yard, allowing main operations inside the plant to potentially resume following safety clearances.

In the wake of the incident, community organizers established temporary air-monitoring updates and emergency support resources for nearby residents affected by the initial smoke advisory. First responders were publicly commended for their rapid containment efforts, which prevented the intense thermal energy and secondary explosions from spreading to adjacent commercial facilities.
