Massive Fire Engulfs Chinese-Owned Mattress Factory in Chonburi as Workers Flee

CHONBURI, Thailand — A massive fire erupted at a large Chinese-owned mattress manufacturing facility in eastern Thailand’s Chonburi Province, sparking multiple explosions, destroying three industrial warehouses, and forcing workers and nearby residents to flee to safety.

The blaze broke out at a facility situated on an 11-rai plot in the That Thong Subdistrict of Bo Thong District.

The incident began around 7:00 p.m. local time, on Wednesday, August 5, 2026 when flames originated inside the primary manufacturing building. Fueled by vast stockpiles of highly flammable synthetic foam, latex, and textiles, the fire spread rapidly to two adjoining warehouses, sending towering plumes of thick black smoke visible from tens of kilometers away.

As workers scrambled out of the compound to escape the advancing flames and severe smoke, a series of loud explosions echoed across the area, believed to be caused by pressurized chemical containers and industrial machinery. The intense heat quickly compromised the structural integrity of the facility, causing large portions of all three steel-frame structures to buckle and collapse.

More than 20 fire engines and emergency response teams from across Chonburi were dispatched to battle the inferno. Firefighters encountered immense difficulty containing the flames due to the continuous ignition of stored mattress materials, forcing crews to maintain a safe perimeter and spray water from outside the collapse zone.

Fanned by strong evening winds, plumes of toxic smoke billowed into nearby neighborhoods, threatening local residents. Local civil defense officials ordered the precautionary evacuation of nearby residents to temporary shelters and relative households to prevent chemical inhalation risks.

Fire crews managed to bring the main body of the fire under control after several hours, though teams remained on site to douse smoldering hotspots beneath the rubble. Authorities and forensic investigators have launched an inquiry to determine the cause of the fire and assess total financial damages.

Preliminary estimates suggest the property damage will easily reach tens of millions of baht, given the complete destruction of the specialized machinery, imported raw materials, and finished inventory. Industrial safety inspectors and environmental officials are slated to inspect the site once the area is fully cooled to check for soil and water contamination, as well as verify whether the plant was fully compliant with local fire code regulations and chemical storage mandates.
