Massive Fire Breakout: Major Explosion Hits Oil Refinery in Visakhapatnam

VISAKHAPATNAM, INDIA — A major fire erupted late Monday night, November 2, 2026, at the Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited (HPCL) oil refinery in Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh, following a sudden explosion. The incident sent massive flames soaring into the night sky and dense plumes of black smoke over the surrounding residential areas.

The explosion occurred around late Monday evening in the Gajuwaka industrial zone of the coastal city, specifically within the refinery's Residue Upgradation Facility (RUF).

As a loud blast shattered the quiet and flames lit up the night sky for miles, panicked neighbors poured out of their homes into the streets. Eyewitnesses reported seeing thick, billowing smoke quickly engulfing the local sky.

"The sudden loud sound frightened everyone, and massive flames immediately filled the sky," said a local resident. "People rushed out of their houses out of fear before emergency services responded."

Following the blast, HPCL’s specialized internal firefighting units and local emergency teams immediately mobilized to isolate the affected unit and contain the blaze.

Visakhapatnam Police Commissioner Shankabrata Bagchi and local authorities confirmed that the emergency response teams successfully brought the fire under control, preventing it from spreading to critical storage tanks or adjacent operational units.

Officials confirmed that there were no casualties or reported injuries among refinery staff or nearby residents, and clarified that the atmospheric smoke did not pose an immediate toxic hazard to the public.

In an official statement following the containment operations, HPCL representatives confirmed that all primary refinery units were stabilized and operating safely.

State safety inspectors and HPCL technical teams have launched a formal inquiry into the root cause of the explosion—investigating whether operational pressure issues, structural component failures, or technical faults triggered the fire at the processing unit.

Local environmental advocacy groups and community leaders have called for greater transparency regarding industrial safety measures, urging HPCL to publish the findings of the inquiry once completed. They emphasized the need for regular safety audits and enhanced emergency preparedness protocols in the Gajuwaka industrial belt to ensure the long-term safety of both refinery workers and the surrounding residential populations.
