Massive Explosion and Fire Rips Through Bronx Building, Leaving Multiple Injured

NEW YORK — A violent explosion triggered a massive five-alarm fire at a multi-family apartment building in the Norwood section of the Bronx on Wednesday, August 5, 2026, leaving at least one person dead and over a dozen others injured, including several firefighters.

The Fire Department of New York (FDNY) received initial calls reporting a powerful blast shortly before 12:30 p.m. at 374 East 209th Street near Decatur Avenue. The blast shook surrounding blocks, blowing window frames across the street and ripping front doors off their hinges on upper floors.

Flames quickly spread across multiple levels of the three-story brick structure, prompting FDNY commanders to rapidly escalate response alarms. More than 270 firefighters, paramedics, and emergency response personnel deployed to battle the raging inferno.

"I heard a big boom, as if a bomb was right next to me. The whole room shook, and within seconds the hallway was filled with thick smoke," said one resident describing the moment the blast hit.

Firefighters executed multiple high-risk rescues using fire escapes and aerial ladders to pull trapped residents from window ledges while heavy smoke billowed from the upper windows.

Crews faced extreme heat and zero-visibility conditions inside the residence. Operations were temporarily shifted to an exterior defensive stance after a partial interior floor collapse occurred between upper levels.

Emergency Medical Services (EMS) treated several victims at the scene for severe burns and smoke inhalation. Multiple civilians with life-threatening and serious injuries were transported to nearby trauma centers, while injured firefighters were treated for burn injuries and heat exhaustion.

Con Edison personnel quickly shut off natural gas and electrical service to the address as a precautionary measure to prevent secondary hazards.

The American Red Cross and New York City Emergency Management (NYCEM) established a temporary relief center at nearby P.S. 56 on East 207th Street to provide shelter, food, and emergency supplies to displaced families.

FDNY Fire Marshals, along with city building inspectors, remain on the scene to investigate the root cause of the explosion and evaluate the structural integrity of neighboring properties.
