Massive Child Abuse Scandal in France: School Staff Investigated for Violence and Sexual Assault

In May 2026, a massive child abuse scandal has come to light in France, targeting non-teaching staff at 84 kindergartens and 20 primary schools across Paris. Parents have reported serious allegations, including physical and sexual abuse of children during non-classroom activities, such as recess and after-school programs.

Mayor Emmanuel Gregoire is at the forefront of this investigation, having suspended 78 supervisors, with 31 suspected of involvement in sexual abuse. The mayor, who has openly shared his own experience of abuse, emphasized the need for comprehensive reforms to ensure the safety of children in these vulnerable settings.

According to Paris Prosecutor Laure Beccuau, ongoing investigations have already summoned five individuals to court due to credible allegations. In response to these revelations, the city administration is committed to improving the vetting processes for staff who supervise children, along with enhancing training to include proper reporting methods for suspected abuse.

A notable case has emerged that highlights the severity of the situation—a school monitor, accused of sexually assaulting three girls and harassing nine others, is set to face court soon. This specific incident underscores the urgent calls for better oversight and accountability in the hiring and management of staff working with children.

Statistics reveal a staggering reality, with an estimated 160,000 children in France suffering from rape or sexual assault annually, as reported by independent commission CIVIISE. Alarmingly, family members are identified as perpetrators in 80% of these cases, highlighting a complex societal issue that extends beyond school environments.

The current scandal is a push for systemic change within the educational framework, as parents and advocates demand that safety measures are put in place to protect children from potential abuse. This incident has sparked widespread outrage and a renewed commitment from French authorities to confront and eradicate child abuse practices within schools.
