Massive Chemical Plant Fire Triggers Mass Evacuation Near São Paulo

SÃO PAULO, Brazil — A massive fire broke out at a chemical facility in the metropolitan area of São Paulo, triggering multiple explosions, sending a dense column of black smoke high into the sky, and forcing the precautionary evacuation of approximately 150 nearby residents.

The blaze erupted at the Quema Química plant in the municipality of Itaquaquecetuba, a facility that manufactures solvents and resins and houses two dozen large tanks containing highly flammable materials.

The emergency began around 3:22 p.m. local time on Wednesday, August 5, 2026 when a sudden blast rocked the factory grounds. Within minutes, flames engulfed the main production yard and spread rapidly toward the tank storage area, setting off a succession of secondary detonations inside the plant and along nearby underground drainage lines.

Alarmed by the intense heat and rising plumes of toxic smoke, local civil defense authorities and emergency services established a safety perimeter around the neighborhood, ordering approximately 150 residents in adjacent homes and commercial properties to evacuate immediately. Local power distributor EDP temporarily cut electricity service to the surrounding area as a precaution.

More than 30 fire engines and emergency response vehicles were deployed to the scene. Firefighters focused their primary efforts on cooling the remaining chemical storage tanks to prevent further structural ruptures and mitigate the risk of severe environmental contamination.

No casualties have been reported. Authorities emphasized that the cordoned zone will remain closed and power will remain suspended until emergency personnel fully extinguish the flames and certify the area safe from toxic fumes and further explosions.

Environmental protection officials from Cetesb, the state environmental agency, arrived at the location shortly after the blaze was contained to begin monitoring air quality and testing runoff water from firefighting operations. Initial concerns centered on the possibility of toxic runoff entering local storm water channels, which could potentially threaten surrounding waterways if not properly contained by hazardous material mitigation booms.

Local authorities have opened a formal inquiry to investigate the root cause of the initial blast that triggered the inferno. Investigators are expected to analyze industrial safety protocols and review plant equipment logs once emergency services give final clearance, while municipal welfare agencies assist displaced residents accommodated in nearby temporary shelters.
