Massive Blaze Engulfs Plywood Warehouse in East Delhi's New Ashok Nagar

NEW DELHI, India — A major fire broke out at a high-density plywood warehouse in East Delhi’s New Ashok Nagar area, sending towering plumes of thick black smoke across the surrounding residential sectors and triggering a massive emergency response.

The fire originated deep within the primary storage facility, where tons of stacked timber, plywood sheets, and flammable industrial adhesives were housed. Due to the high fuel load and dry conditions, the flames rapidly spread throughout the multi-story structure, threatening adjacent commercial units and residential buildings crammed along the narrow urban lanes. Security guards and nearby residents alerted authorities upon noticing thick smoke billowing from the ventilation shafts.

The Delhi Fire Services (DFS) dispatched over a dozen fire tenders to the location alongside specialized emergency response units. Firefighters faced significant operational hurdles navigating the narrow access roads, forcing teams to lay extended hose lines from main thoroughfares to reach the core of the blaze.

Responders established a perimeter safety zone and deployed high-pressure water monitors to cool neighboring structures, preventing the inferno from jumping across the tight alleys. After several hours of intensive firefighting, the blaze was successfully contained and isolated. No fatalities or serious injuries were reported, as workers inside the facility managed to evacuate immediately when the alarm was raised. However, the structural damage to the warehouse was total, resulting in millions of rupees in destroyed inventory and equipment.

"Our primary objective was to prevent the fire from spreading to the tightly packed residential structures flanking the facility," stated a senior DFS operational officer at the scene. "Despite narrow access lanes and dense combustible materials, coordinated aerial and ground hose operations successfully localized the fire."

Arson investigators and forensic teams from the Delhi Police have initiated a joint investigation to determine the exact origin and cause of the outbreak. Technical experts are currently examining the facility's electrical infrastructure, with preliminary assessments suggesting a potential short circuit in the main power distribution panel or overburdened wiring systems as the primary trigger.

In the wake of the incident, municipal authorities and safety inspectors announced plans to conduct comprehensive safety audits of all commercial warehouses operating within residential and high-density zones across East Delhi. The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) emphasized that strict enforcement of fire safety norms, clear access corridors, and mandatory installation of automated sprinkler systems will be strictly monitored, with legal notices being issued to non-compliant commercial properties to prevent similar hazards in the future.
