Massive Blaze Engulfs CaliBunga Water Park in San Jose, Sending Plumes Over Bay Area

SAN JOSE, California — A dramatic vehicular crash ignited a fast-moving fire late on Saturday afternoon, October 3, 2026 tearing through vegetation and spreading onto structures at CaliBunga Water Park in East San Jose. The blaze sent heavy clouds of dark smoke billowing across the South Bay skyline, prompting emergency responses from multiple fire units.

According to the San Jose Fire Department, the incident began around 4:43 p.m. when a pickup truck crashed through a perimeter fence near the park along Lake Cunningham. The vehicle quickly burst into flames, which rapidly spread into nearby dry grass and brush before reaching the water park's infrastructure.

Flames caught on dry vegetation along the perimeter, climbing directly onto one of the park’s main water slide structures and heavily damaging an adjacent storage shed.

Fire crews arriving at the scene immediately upgraded their response as the blaze threatened additional park attractions. Firefighters managed to contain the flames to the park's northwest corner.

"The fire extended to a water slide structure and a chemical storage building," officials confirmed in an update. "Crews successfully contained the fire to the northwest section of the property. No hazardous chemical releases occurred."

CaliBunga Water Park—formerly the iconic Raging Waters—was closed at the time of the incident due to ongoing park redevelopments around Lake Cunningham Regional Park. Because the venue was closed to the general public, no injuries to park guests were reported.

The San Jose Fire Department Arson Unit has launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the initial truck collision to determine the cause of the crash. Traffic in the immediate vicinity along Capitol Expressway and Tullay Road faced temporary delays while emergency crews overhauled the area.

Local city officials and community advocates have expressed relief that the park was closed when the incident occurred, avoiding potential casualties among weekend visitors. As investigators work to determine whether mechanical failure or driver impairment contributed to the initial crash, local authorities have assured residents that air quality monitoring around Lake Cunningham shows no lingering chemical hazards from the damaged storage facility.
