Massive Blaze Engulfs Assam's Bokakhat Town, Destroying Shops and Cracker Warehouse

A devastating fire broke out in the commercial hub of Bokakhat town in Assam early on Monday, August 31, 2026 destroying multiple commercial establishments—including a firecracker warehouse—and triggering secondary explosions that panicked nearby residents.

The fire reportedly originated inside one of the market area's retail units before quickly reaching an adjacent warehouse stocked with fireworks. The combustible materials ignited almost immediately, resulting in a series of intense explosions that sent sparks, debris, and massive clouds of black smoke towering over the town center.

Fire tenders from Bokakhat and surrounding municipal stations rushed to the scene to prevent the inferno from sweeping through the densely packed commercial block.

"The sound of exploding firecrackers woke up the whole block. Firefighters had a tough time getting close because the blasts kept going off one after another," reported a local resident.

Firefighters battled the raging flames for several hours before managing to isolate the blaze and bring it under control. Fire crews deployed multiple hoses to cool down neighboring structures and stop the fire from spreading to nearby residential buildings. Meanwhile, local police and volunteers cleared the surrounding streets, evacuating nearby store owners and families to safe zones as a precautionary measure. While early assessments indicate extensive financial losses due to destroyed inventory and structural damage, no fatalities or severe injuries have been confirmed so far.

District authorities and local police have cordoned off the affected area to launch an official inquiry into the incident. Investigators are examining whether the initial blaze was caused by a short circuit or an unsafe electrical connection.

Officials are also auditing safety permits and storage regulations for fireworks units operating within crowded town markets to prevent similar incidents in the future.

In response to the tragedy, local merchant associations have called for immediate relief funds and financial assistance to help affected shop owners rebuild their livelihoods. Regional representatives visited the site later in the day, promising a swift review of compensation claims and pledging stricter enforcement of urban safety guidelines to ensure high-hazard inventory is permanently relocated outside densely populated retail zones.
