Massive Aerial Assault: Ukraine Intercepts 135 Drones in Midnight Blitz by Russian Forces

KYIV, Ukraine — Russian forces launched a multi-wave overnight assault involving 163 attack and decoy drones against regions across Ukraine. Ukrainian defense forces successfully intercepted or electronically jammed 135 of the incoming unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), though falling debris and direct impacts resulted in structural damage and civilian injuries across multiple regions.

The coordinated barrage began in the early evening and continued through the early hours of Thursday, September 3, 2026 originating from launch sites in Millerovo and Oryol in Russia, as well as occupied Donetsk and Crimea. According to the Ukrainian Air Force, the offensive utilized standard Shahed-type loitering munitions, jet-powered attack drones, and decoy platforms designed to saturate local air defenses.

Ukrainian mobile fire groups, anti-aircraft missile units, combat aviation, and electronic warfare teams worked in tandem to suppress the incoming threats. Air defense operators neutralized targets over several regions, including Kyiv, Odesa, Khmelnytskyi, and Ternopil.

Despite high interception rates, hits were recorded at 15 locations, with falling fragments landing in at least four distinct areas. In the southern port city of Odesa, drone debris struck a multi-story residential building, damaging multiple floors and injuring 17 people. Additional casualties were reported in the Boryspil district of the Kyiv region and in Khmelnytskyi, where fallen wreckage sparked fires at commercial warehouse facilities.

Local emergency services dispatched firefighters and rescue personnel to contain localized fires and secure damaged infrastructure as civil defense authorities continued damage assessments across the affected provinces.

Military analysts highlight that Russia's increasing deployment of high-speed, jet-powered drones alongside low-cost decoy platforms represents an ongoing effort to overwhelm Ukraine’s air defense systems. By mixing weaponized UAVs with radar-reflecting decoys, these swarms force defenders to expend limited interceptor missiles and quickly identify high-priority threats during dense night raids.

The continuous long-range strike campaigns underscore Ukraine's operational need for sustained international military aid, particularly anti-aircraft munitions and advanced electronic warfare systems. As night-time drone swarms continue to target energy infrastructure and urban hubs, Ukrainian defense planners remain reliant on a multi-layered defense network to protect key population centers and critical supply networks.
