Mass Hospitalization: Over 100 Secondary School Students Rushed to Medical Centers After Methane Gas Leak in Ogun State

OGUN STATE, NIGERIA — Widespread panic swept across several communities in Ogun State on Wednesday morning, October 21, 2026 as more than 100 secondary school students were rushed to healthcare facilities after inhaling suspected toxic methane gas emissions. Multiple victims reportedly lost consciousness as the pungent odor enveloped classrooms and school compounds across Ijebu-Ode, Ago-Iwoye, and Ijebu-Igbo.

The emergency unfolded around 10:00 a.m. local time when students and academic staff began experiencing severe respiratory distress, dizziness, and sudden fainting spells.

Among the hardest-hit institutions were Ijebu-Igbo Girls Grammar School and Anglican Girls Grammar School in Ijebu-Ode. School authorities quickly evacuated students from affected classrooms, with several schools in Ago-Iwoye shutting down completely by mid-morning to protect pupils.

"The students and staff started inhaling the gas and immediately began to have difficulty breathing. Some of them fainted on the spot and had to be rushed straight to hospitals. Parents who heard the news rushed to the schools in panic to take their children home."— An anonymous secondary school teacher

Emergency responders, local volunteers, and distressed parents transported affected students to nearby general hospitals and medical centers for immediate treatment. Medical teams quickly administered oxygen therapy and supportive care to stabilize the children.

State government officials confirmed that emergency protocols were enacted swiftly and that affected students are expected to recover as medical personnel continue to monitor their conditions closely.

Addressing the incident, government representatives assured the public that the situation was brought under control. Preliminary investigations suggest that the emissions stem from natural occurrences associated with geological and tectonic fault lines in the region, rather than industrial sabotage or pipeline leaks.

Authorities urged residents and school administrators to remain calm and advised anyone exposed to the odor to cover their nose and mouth with wet handkerchiefs.

Meanwhile, community leaders, school officials, and concerned parents continue to call on state environmental agencies to establish permanent containment measures and prevent recurring occurrences.
