SAN JUAN, PUERTO RICO — At least three people have died and 49 others were rescued after an overloaded makeshift vessel capsized in treacherous waters near Mona Island, off the western coast of Puerto Rico.
The disaster unfolded in the Mona Passage—a notoriously dangerous stretch of ocean separating Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic. Emergency operations began around noon on Monday when a passing commercial vessel spotted survivors clinging to debris in open water approximately 10 nautical miles off Mona Island and managed to pull four individuals to safety. Survivors later reported that an altercation broke out aboard the overcrowded craft, causing the vessel to capsize and throwing dozens of passengers into the water, many of whom were not wearing life jackets.
A coordinated search-and-rescue operation was quickly launched by the U.S. Coast Guard alongside U.S. Customs and Border Protection, the Puerto Rico Police, and regional emergency units. Helicopters, fixed-wing aircraft, and cutter vessels deployed to the scene managed to pull 49 survivors from the water and recover three victims.
The rescued survivors were transferred aboard Coast Guard vessels to federal authorities for medical evaluation and processing. Crews are continuing to sweep the waters for additional missing passengers based on survivor accounts indicating around 62 people were originally aboard the vessel.
The Mona Passage is frequently used by human smugglers navigating precarious, wooden vessels known as yolas from the Dominican Republic and Haiti toward U.S. territory. Federal officials warned that the combination of severe overcrowding, unpredictable ocean currents, and unseaworthy makeshift boats makes these illegal crossings exceptionally hazardous.
Humanitarian organizations and migration advocates point out that such desperate voyage are driven by worsening economic instability, gang violence, and political turmoil across parts of the Caribbean. They stress that while enhanced maritime patrols and interdictions may disrupt individual smuggling runs, addressing the underlying socio-economic crises in origin countries is essential to curbing the steady stream of migrants risking their lives on dangerous open-sea crossings.
