Maritime Disaster off Busan: Coast Guard Scours Waters After Tugboat Overturns With Eight Crew Members

Busan, South Korea—The water was flat and gray when the distress call hit the regional monitoring station. Within minutes, the 286-ton tugboat had slipped beneath the surface nine kilometers southeast of Oryukdo. It was supposed to be a routine towing operation out of Busan Port. Instead, it turned into an urgent race against the tide.

Coast guard vessels converged on the coordinates before the wakes had even settled. Divers found the vessel resting on the seabed, its hull inverted and trapped in heavy currents.

One Indonesian crew member was pulled from the swells alive during the initial hours. Another South Korean sailor was recovered shortly after, unconscious and unresponsive. Medical teams on the dock tried resuscitation efforts for an hour before calling time of death.

Six other men remained unaccounted for as daylight faded. Families gathered at the port authority terminal, wrapped in blankets and staring mutely at the gray horizon.

"We deployed every available asset in the district within twenty minutes," said a senior maritime rescue coordinator who spoke on condition of anonymity. "The sub-surface visibility is near zero, and the wreckage geometry is unstable."

Strong winds picked up by midnight, creating choppy whitecaps that threatened the stability of surface search craft. Floodlights cut through the sea spray as rescue boats maintained grid patterns across the drop zone.

Port officials confirmed the vessel had undergone standard safety inspections just weeks prior. Maintenance logs showed no pending mechanical infractions or engine complaints.

Investigators boarded shipping company headquarters before noon to seize maintenance records and communication logs. Company representatives declined to offer public statements as relatives grew increasingly vocal in the waiting tents.

The search perimeter expanded outward by three nautical miles as dawn broke over the breakwater.
