MANLY, Sydney — A spearfishing trip turned into a beachfront heartbreak on Tuesday afternoon after a man tragically died after being caught in a powerful rip current off North Head. Despite a massive, multi-agency rescue effort and desperate resuscitation attempts on the shore, the man could not be saved.
The emergency unfolded just before 3:00 PM on Tuesday, June 16, 2026, when bystanders on the headland at Shelly Beach heard frantic cries for help echoing from the eastern side of the cliffs.
A man, believed to be a US national in his 40s, had been out spearfishing between Blue Fish Point and Shelly Beach alongside a 20-year-old companion. While in the water, the pair were suddenly swept into a severe rip current. The older man rapidly lost consciousness in the water, prompting his younger companion to desperately scream for assistance. Witnesses on the shore immediately dialed Triple Zero (000).
The emergency call sparked a rapid, large-scale response from emergency services, deploying multiple intensive care and special operations crews from NSW Ambulance alongside the Toll NSW Ambulance Rescue Helicopter. They were joined by Northern Beaches Council Lifeguards, the Westpac Life Saver Rescue Helicopter, and officers from both the Northern Beaches Police and the NSW Police Marine Area Command.
Lifeguards stationed at Manly Beach launched a jet-ski and raced toward Blue Fish Point, where they successfully located both men in distress. They retrieved the pair from the water, finding the older man completely unresponsive and not breathing, before rushing them back to the relative safety of Shelly Beach.
Waiting paramedics immediately took over as the jet-ski reached the sand just before 3:15 PM. Confirming the man had no pulse, paramedics and police officers commenced rigorous CPR directly on Shelly Beach. An aeromedical team was also dropped off by the Toll Rescue Helicopter to provide advanced critical care.
The unconscious man was rushed to a nearby hospital under emergency conditions, but he was tragically pronounced dead a short time later. His 20-year-old companion was assessed by medical personnel.
Officers attached to the Northern Beaches Police Area Command have commenced an inquiry into the tragic drowning. Police will conduct an investigation and prepare a comprehensive report for the information of the Coroner.
Authorities have reminded the public of the volatile nature of the waters around the headland and urged extreme caution when engaging in water activities along the coastline.
