Manhunt Launched: Gunman on the Run After Teenager Shot in the Chest at Greenacre

GREENACRE, SYDNEY — Police have launched an urgent manhunt after a teenager was shot in the chest during a violent late-night incident in Greenacre, leaving the young victim fighting for his life and a gunman on the loose.

Emergency services were called to the scene late on Thursday night, August 6, 2026 following reports of gunshots echoing through a residential neighborhood. Upon arrival, officers discovered the teenage boy lying on the ground with a severe gunshot wound to his upper torso.

Paramedics worked feverishly at the scene to stabilize the young victim before rushing him under police escort to a nearby major trauma hospital. He remains in critical condition as surgical teams work to treat his life-threatening injuries.

Witnesses reported seeing a lone gunman fleeing the immediate area on foot moments after the shots were fired.

"I heard two loud bangs that sounded like firecrackers, then screaming," recalled a local resident. "When I looked out my window, someone in dark clothing was sprinting down the street toward a getaway car waiting down the block."

New South Wales Police immediately established a large crime scene, cordoning off the street as forensic specialists, dog squads, and detective units combed the area for shell casings, discarded evidence, and CCTV footage.

Tactical officers conducted door-to-door inquiries and established road blocks in surrounding suburbs, but the suspect remains at large. Police believe the shooting may have been a targeted attack, though the precise motive remains under active investigation.

Local authorities have appealed to the public for assistance, urging anyone who may have witnessed suspicious activity, or drivers with dash cam footage from the Greenacre area between 10:00 p.m. and midnight, to contact Crime Stoppers immediately.

Police presence has been stepped up across the district to reassure anxious residents while the operation to track down the shooter continues.

Detectives from the local police area command, supported by State Crime Command's Strike Force Raptor, are reviewing nearby security footage and mobile phone records to identify any associates or vehicles linked to the attack. Authorities have urged anyone with information, no matter how minor, to come forward as the manhunt intensifies.
