Dublin, Ireland— A quiet cul-de-sac in Tallaght was locked down at 8:40 p.m. Friday after Gardai found a man dead inside a semi-detached house and a woman bleeding heavily from stab wounds in the front garden. Neighbors said they heard screaming and a door slamming. Armed Gardai arrived within minutes and arrested a man at the scene.
The victims were known to each other. Gardai believe the attack happened inside the house before spilling outside. The man who died, aged 45, was found in the hallway with multiple stab wounds. The woman, aged 42, was found near the driveway with wounds to her neck and chest. She was taken to Tallaght University Hospital in critical condition.
"We are treating this as a domestic-related incident, but all lines remain open," a senior Garda investigator told reporters outside the cordon. He said a kitchen knife was recovered from the kitchen sink. No other suspects are being sought, but Gardai are still interviewing neighbors and family members to establish a timeline. The house has been preserved for forensic examination.
Witnesses said the couple had lived in the estate for six years. One neighbor said she heard shouting for about 10 minutes before it went silent, then a woman screaming for help. Another said he saw a man pacing in the front garden covered in blood. "He just stood there, not moving, then Gardai tackled him," the neighbor said. Children on the street were taken inside by parents.
Paramedics worked on the woman for 25 minutes before loading her into an ambulance. Gardai said she had lost significant blood. Her condition was described as critical but stable late Friday. The man was pronounced dead at 9:15 p.m. by a doctor. A Garda family liaison officer has been assigned to both families.
Forensic teams photographed blood trails from the kitchen to the front door and collected clothing from a wheelie bin. The estate, usually quiet on Friday nights, filled with patrol cars, an ambulance and a Garda technical unit van. Residents were told to stay indoors for two hours while armed units cleared neighboring houses.
Tallaght has seen a rise in domestic violence calls this year, according to Garda figures released last month. Local representatives said support services are stretched. The local council said it will offer trauma support to residents on the street. A community meeting is planned for Monday at the local parish hall.
Gardai have asked anyone who heard or saw anything between 8:00 and 9:00 p.m. on the estate to contact Tallaght Garda Station. The State Pathologist will carry out a post-mortem today. The suspect remains in custody under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act and can be held for up to 24 hours.
