SINGAPORE – A 50-year-old man, Siow Jia Rui, has been charged with two counts of promoting enmity between different racial groups. The charges stem from his alleged posting of anti-Jewish content on the messaging platform WhatsApp.
The incident reportedly began on July 25, 2025, when Siow posted a WhatsApp profile status containing slurs against Jews. Two months later, while in China, he allegedly posted three additional disappearing statuses with images that further targeted the Jewish community.
The police received a report on September 10, 2025, regarding the offensive content and swiftly acted, arresting Siow three days later after identifying him as the account owner. Officials emphasized that they take such acts seriously, highlighting the potential threat to racial and religious harmony in Singapore.
Siow appeared in district court on April 28, 2026, but did not indicate how he plans to plead. If convicted, he faces penalties that may include up to three years in prison, a fine, or both for each charge.
Law enforcement in Singapore has reiterated its commitment to addressing hate speech and promoting social harmony, reinforcing that such acts will not be tolerated and offenders will be dealt with firmly.
This case arrives amidst growing concerns about rising anti-Semitism, prompting further discussions on the need for vigilance and community respect in an increasingly diverse society.
