Man Arrested for Poisoning Baby Food in Austria, Czechia, and Slovakia to Extort €2 Million

A 39-year-old man was arrested in Austria on May 2, 2026, in connection with a disturbing case of rat poison found in jars of baby food. Authorities suspect the act was part of an extortion scheme aimed at the German baby food manufacturer HiPP, demanding €2 million.

The scandal unfolded when five contaminated jars were discovered in stores across Austria, Czechia, and Slovakia last month. Police confirmed that these "manipulated" jars were recovered before they could be sold to consumers, with one jar containing a significant dose of poison.

The situation escalated when authorities learned that HiPP received an extortion email on March 27, 2026, demanding the ransom within six days. Unfortunately, the company did not check the email until weeks later, after the deadline had expired. HiPP later clarified that the message had been sent to a general email address that is not frequently monitored.

The contaminated jars prompted a product recall, as fears grew over the safety of the products. Austrian authorities warned parents to consult doctors if their children exhibited any signs of distress related to the contaminated food.

With the arrest occurring in the Burgenland region, police have not disclosed further details about the suspect or the specifics of the investigation, as it remains ongoing. The incident has raised significant concerns about food safety and the extreme measures some individuals may take to extort money.
