BAMAKO — In a major escalation of the long-running Sahel conflict, armed insurgents have launched a wave of coordinated attacks targeting multiple strategic positions across Mali. The synchronized assaults hit several key areas simultaneously, including a critical northern military garrison housing government forces and Russian paramilitary contractors, as well as a location situated just south of the capital city, Bamako.

The offensive began around 5:00 AM local time on Saturday, July 4, 2026 plunging the military-led junta into a fresh security crisis. This represents the latest severe threat to the government since high-profile insurgent operations crippled central positions and saw the capture of major bases earlier this year.

A Tuareg-led armed group, the Azawad Liberation Front (FLA), confirmed responsibility for spearheaded operations in the northeastern Kidal region. Heavy fighting erupted in the strategic town of Anefis, which serves as one of the last remaining footholds for the Malian army and Russian Africa Corps fighters (formerly known as the Wagner Group) in the region.

A spokesperson for the FLA stated that several positions within Anefis had fallen to their fighters, though intense combat continued inside the town. Meanwhile, local sources indicated that government forces and Russian paramilitary troops deployed at the local military camp were putting up stiff resistance to avoid a total rout. Concurrently, the central city of Gao faced heavy bombardment, with rockets and gunfire targeting its primary military installation since before dawn.

"Armed groups are inside the town, but the army is still fighting back. The camp has not yet fallen," an Anefis resident reported as explosions echoed through the area.

While northern garrisons faced intense pressure, the multi-front assault also struck shockingly close to Mali's seat of power. Military and security officials confirmed that a coordinated raid targeted Kenieroba, a town located south of the capital, Bamako.

Local security sources revealed that a state prison in Kenieroba came under direct fire during the morning raid, stoking fears that the conflict is aggressively bleeding into the country's southern regions, which have historically been insulated from the worst of the northern insurgency. Additional attacks were also reported further central in Sevare.

The multi-front offensive underscores the precarious position of Mali's military government, led by General Assimi Goïta. The junta has increasingly relied on Russian Africa Corps mercenaries to secure the territory after severing traditional defense ties with Western nations.

With major supply lines into the capital already highly volatile and insurgent networks demonstrating a sophisticated capability to strike the north, center, and south simultaneously, international observers warn that Mali's security landscape is rapidly deteriorating into unmanageable chaos. The Malian government has yet to issue an official statement regarding the total casualties or the status of the captured infrastructure.
