Mali’s Junta Asked Russians to Bring Order; Militants Just Stormed In

Mali's military government, led by Assimi Goïta, experienced one of the most significant setbacks in its struggle to maintain control against mounting insurgent attacks. The coordinated offensive, primarily executed by the Jama’at Nusrat al-Islam wal-Muslimin (JNIM) and allied Tuareg rebels, resulted in widespread assaults across the capital, Bamako, and several other cities.

In recent months, as insecurity grew, the junta had turned to Russian support, specifically to the Africa Corps, which replaced the former Wagner Group. However, these reinforcements failed to repel the insurgents. Reports indicate that key locations, including the Bamako airport and the garrison town of Kati, were targeted, leading to the tragic death of Mali's Defense Minister Sadio Camara.

Camara had been instrumental in developing military strategies to counter insurgents and had clashed with the junta over tactics and operations. His loss has raised serious doubts about the effectiveness of the military’s approach, particularly in light of the successful takeover of Kidal, a crucial northern city that had previously been under government control.

The JNIM claimed that the assault was a response to Malian military operations, including drone strikes, and threatened to impose further sieges around Bamako, echoing past tactics that restricted fuel and supply lines. Following the offensive, fears of increasing instability have spread throughout the capital, prompting warnings from international observers.

In the wake of this crisis, Russian officials proclaimed their intent to continue support for Mali, despite the evident failures of recent military operations. The situation has highlighted vulnerabilities in the Malian government's ability to coordinate its defenses effectively, stirring skepticism about the long-term viability of the junta's reliance on Russian military assistance amid escalating militant activities.
