Major 7.7 Earthquake Strikes Southern Panama: Mass Evacuations and Widespread Structural Damage

PANAMA CITY, Panama — A powerful 7.7-magnitude earthquake struck near the southern coast of Panama on Friday, October 9, 2026 shaking skyscrapers in the capital, damaging structural foundations, and triggering mass evacuations across the nation.

The epicenter of the quake was localized near the rural community of La Pitaloza in the southern province of Herrera, at a shallow depth of roughly 10 kilometers. The violent tremors were felt as far away as San José, the capital of neighboring Costa Rica.

The powerful shockwaves sent thousands of panicked residents pouring into the streets as office towers and residential buildings swayed violently. In Panama City and regional hubs, sirens echoed through urban areas as civil defense authorities initiated emergency procedures, ordering immediate evacuations of high-rise structures and coastal quarters.

Air travel faced immediate disruption as operations at Tocumen International Airport were temporarily suspended to allow engineers to conduct structural checks on runways and terminal buildings.

"The ground began shaking fiercely without warning, forcing everyone out into open areas," reported local officials. "Our priority remains clearing affected spaces and ensuring public safety as aftershocks continue."

Reports of significant infrastructure damage began emerging shortly after the main shock, particularly in towns closest to the epicenter. In Penonomé and Chitré, social media videos and local news footage verified structural collapses, cracked roadways, and severe damage to historic churches and commercial storefronts.

Power outages were reported across several central and southern provinces as regional electrical grids suffered line disruptions. Despite the widespread shaking, the Panama Canal Authority reported that the vital shipping waterway suffered no major operational disruptions and continued normal transit activities.

Following the earthquake, the U.S. Tsunami Warning System issued regional tsunami advisories for coastal regions across Central and South America, including Panama, Colombia, Costa Rica, and Ecuador. Coastal communities were briefly urged to seek higher ground before monitoring agencies later confirmed the tsunami threat had safely passed.

Emergency personnel, medical teams, and search-and-rescue units remain deployed across southern and central provinces to assess casualties, clear debris from roads, and assist displaced families.
