Mahikeng in Shock: Prominent Activist Thato Molosankwe Shot Dead at His Home

MAHIKENG — The North West province is reeling following the shocking assassination of prominent social activist and humanitarian Thato Senganga Molosankwe. Known across the community as a fearless crusader against crime and corruption, Molosankwe was gunned down in the early hours of Wednesday morning, May 19, 2026.

The brutal killing has sparked widespread grief and fear, with residents demanding immediate answers and swift justice for a leader who dedicated his life to protecting others.

According to local police reports, the attack took place at Molosankwe's home in Lomanyaneng village, situated just outside Mahikeng.

Unknown assailants accosted the activist under the cover of darkness. Molosankwe was shot multiple times and tragically succumbed to his injuries at the scene. Authorities confirmed that no one else was injured in the targeted attack.

While a definitive motive has yet to be established by investigators, community members firmly believe the assassination is directly linked to his outspoken stance against local crime syndicates and corruption.

"He was a fearless voice who spoke out when others were too afraid," a devastated neighbor shared. "To silence him like this in his own home is a massive blow to all of us."

Thato Molosankwe was far more than a local commentator; he was a deeply respected grassroots activist, humanitarian, and traditional healer. He famously founded the Thato Molosankwe Charity Foundation and used the derelict Credo Mutwa Cultural Village in Mahikeng as a base to run his upliftment programs. He often described himself passionately as "a father of fatherless children and of absent fathers."

The South African Police Service (SAPS) in the North West has launched a full-scale murder investigation. No suspects have been publicly identified or arrested at this stage.

With the province already under immense pressure due to an escalation in violent crimes, local leaders are warning that the targeting of community whistleblowers could silence vital anti-crime efforts. Detectives are urging anyone with information regarding the suspects or the vehicle used in the Lomanyaneng village attack to come forward immediately.
