Violent protests and looting across France have left President Emmanuel Macron facing criticism from former allies, political rivals and members of his government. Demonstrations over living costs and school conditions escalated on Saturday, with the Paris prosecutor reporting 855 arrests linked to the unrest. Macron condemned the violence, while opponents accused him of responding too slowly and losing authority. He was also criticized for being abroad on a diplomatic trip as the crisis unfolded. Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez acknowledged that authorities had failed to anticipate the disorder.
