Protests spread across France on October 17, with students, workers, trade unions and yellow vest activists joining demonstrations over education standards, cost of living and rising fuel prices. In Lyon, protesters smashed windows at the city’s tourism office and a fire broke out inside. The mayor called the damage a tragedy for the city. More than 272 people were arrested nationwide, according to authorities. Police also used tear gas in some cities, while officers and demonstrators clashed in Paris later.
