Lucerne Mudslide Kills One Resident, Heavy Rain Floods Homes After Torrential Rainfall Hits Region

Lucerne, Switzerland— Torrential rainfall triggered a flash mudslide on the outskirts of Lucerne on October 20, 2026, killing one resident and inundating a cluster of homes with mud, water, and debris.

The slide hit just before 5 a.m. in the Kriens area, where a saturated hillside above a residential street gave way. A wall of mud and broken timber slammed into the ground floors of three houses. Fire alarms went off across the neighborhood.

A 68-year-old man living on the ground floor was trapped inside his home. Firefighters found him under collapsed furniture and mud after digging for nearly an hour. Paramedics pronounced him dead at the scene.

Lucerne police said more than 80 millimeters of rain fell in less than six hours overnight, overwhelming drainage channels and turning small streams into torrents. The soil, already soaked from a wet week, simply let go.

"We had water up to our knees within minutes. Then the mud came," a neighbor told NZZ. Her family escaped through a back window. Several cars were pushed 20 meters down the street.

About 25 residents were evacuated and taken to a temporary shelter at a local school gymnasium. The civil protection unit pumped water from basements and used excavators to clear the street.

The cantonal hazard office had issued a level 4 warning for mudslides and surface flooding late Sunday. Officials said this specific slope had been flagged as moderately susceptible but had never failed before.

Power was cut to the area as a safety measure. Geologists warned of further movement if rain continued.

The prosecutor's office is examining whether building permits in the zone had accounted for updated hazard maps. Clean-up crews remain on site.
