KUCHING — Malaysian authorities have detained a 16-year-old student following a shocking classroom assault in which a female teacher was injured with an axe at a private international school in Kuching, the capital of Sarawak state. The incident, which was broadcast live on social media, sent shockwaves through the local community and raised urgent concerns regarding campus safety.
According to statements from the Kuching District Police Headquarters, emergency services received an urgent call regarding the disturbance at approximately 8:03 a.m. Investigators revealed that the teenager had brought firecrackers to the school premises alongside an axe before confronting the teacher.
The suspect allegedly used a mobile phone attached to his forehead to live-stream the assault, capturing footage that was subsequently circulated across various social media platforms. Closed-circuit television (CCTV) footage from inside the classroom also captured portions of the confrontation. Quick-thinking students in the affected classroom managed to safely evacuate the area during the chaos, ensuring no further injuries occurred among the student body.
The victim, a female teacher, sustained lacerations to her hand during the altercation. Emergency medical responders treated her at the scene before she received further medical care. School leadership later confirmed that the teacher's condition is stable as she recovers from the physical injuries.
Sarawak acting police commissioner Saifullizan Ishak confirmed the student's arrest, stating that a thorough investigation is underway to determine the motive behind the attack and gather all relevant evidence. Law enforcement authorities have classified the case under Section 324 of the Penal Code for voluntarily causing hurt by dangerous weapons, as well as Section 6(1) of the Explosives Act 1957 due to the presence of firecrackers.
Following initial questioning, the teenager was released on police bail as legal proceedings continue. Police officials have strongly urged members of the public to refrain from speculating, sharing unverified videos, or spreading graphic footage online out of respect for the ongoing investigation and the privacy of those affected.
In the wake of the incident, the school administration announced plans to hold special assemblies to address students' concerns, provide clear context, and coordinate counseling support services for witnesses and affected pupils. Meanwhile, the Sarawak State Education Department stated that it has maintained close contact with the school administration and stands ready to offer comprehensive psychological and administrative assistance.
