LIBYA: Celebrating Independence Day

Libya’s Independence Day is celebrated annually on December 24, marking the country’s liberation from British and French rule in 1951. On this historic day, King Idris I proclaimed the establishment of the United Kingdom of Libya, uniting the nation as a sovereign and independent state.

The celebration of Independence Day was suppressed during the rule of Muammar Gaddafi, but it was officially revived in 2011 following the Libyan revolution. Since then, the holiday has symbolized national unity, resilience, and the ongoing effort to rebuild the country.

This year, Libya celebrates its 74th anniversary of independence with a range of national events, including:

• Official national ceremonies

• Military parades in Martyrs’ Square, Tripoli

• Cultural and heritage events

• Patriotic songs and performances

• Speeches by government officials

• Fireworks displays

To mark the occasion, the government has declared a public holiday for both the public and private sectors, as well as schools across the country.

Independence Day celebrations reflect Libya’s long struggle for sovereignty and serve as a reminder of the nation’s determination to overcome ongoing challenges while striving for unity, stability, and a peaceful future.
