Level Crossing Tragedy In Northern England, Freight Train Hits Van, One Driver Dead, Rail Line Shut

York, United Kingdom— A freight train and delivery van collided at a level crossing in northern England on October 31, 2026, killing one driver and shutting down a busy rail line for hours.

The crash happened at 9:20 a.m. at Barton Hill crossing near Malton, North Yorkshire. The crossing has half barriers and warning lights but no full gate. British Transport Police said a white delivery van entered the crossing as a freight train hauling containers from Teesport to Leeds approached at about 60 miles per hour.

The train hit the van broadside. The van was dragged 200 meters down the track before the train stopped. The driver, a 48-year-old man from Scarborough, was pronounced dead at the scene. No one on the train was injured. The train driver was treated for shock.

Network Rail said the crossing’s lights and barriers were working at the time. Witnesses gave conflicting accounts. One said the van stopped, then edged forward as if trying to beat the barriers. Another said the lights were flashing but the driver may have been blinded by low sun. The van’s tachograph and dashcam were recovered.

The line between York and Scarborough was closed in both directions. More than 20 trains were canceled or diverted. Replacement buses were laid on but took twice as long. Passengers were stranded at Malton and Seamer. The line is single track in places, so disruption spread quickly.

Level crossing crashes have fallen in the UK but still kill several people each year. The Rail Accident Investigation Branch said it would examine this crossing. It had been flagged in a 2022 risk assessment for poor sightlines due to a hedge. The hedge was cut back then, but locals said it had grown again.

The van company said the driver was experienced and had done the route for three years. It said it was cooperating with police. The train operator, DB Cargo, said the driver followed protocol and applied emergency brakes.

By afternoon, the wreckage was cleared but the crossing remained closed for forensic work. Investigators measured skid marks and checked signal logs. The road over the crossing was also shut. Farmers used a detour through fields.
