For a long time, new features arrived in browsers the way weather arrives—gradually, inevitably, and without much room for negotiation. One update at a time, tools appeared that summarized, suggested, predicted, and explained, quietly reshaping what it meant to browse the web.

Firefox is now offering something rarer than a feature: a choice.

In an upcoming release, Mozilla is adding a dedicated switch that allows users to turn off AI-powered features across the browser. With a single setting, generative summaries, smart suggestions, AI-assisted previews, and other machine-driven enhancements can be silenced—not hidden, not ignored, but deliberately disabled.

The addition is subtle, tucked into settings rather than announced with fanfare. Yet its significance lies in what it acknowledges: that not every user experiences AI as help. For some, these tools feel intrusive. For others, unnecessary. For many, simply tiring.

Until now, AI features in browsers have tended to arrive first and explain themselves later. Firefox’s new control reverses that rhythm. Instead of asking users to adapt, it allows them to define the boundaries of their own experience. Features can still be enabled individually, but they no longer insist on being present.

What disappears when the switch is flipped is not functionality, but interpretation. Pages load without summaries hovering over them. Tabs remain ungrouped unless the user chooses otherwise. Images stay images, untranslated by algorithms unless asked. The browser becomes quieter, closer to what it once was: a window rather than a guide.

Mozilla has framed the change as part of a broader commitment to user agency. Importantly, the preference is designed to persist across updates, resisting the familiar cycle in which settings are reset and choices must be reasserted. The decision to opt out is treated as durable, not provisional.

This move lands amid a wider tension in software design. AI is often presented as inevitable progress, a layer that must be accepted wholesale or rejected entirely. Firefox’s approach suggests a third path: selective participation. Use what helps. Disable what doesn’t. Decide once, and move on.

The switch will not end debates about AI in consumer software. But it subtly shifts the balance of power. In an environment where automation increasingly assumes consent, Firefox pauses long enough to ask.

And sometimes, the most meaningful innovation is not adding intelligence, but knowing when to step aside.
