Lebanon Border Village Hit by Shelling: Three Lives Lost During Cross-Border Artillery Strikes

Marjayoun, Lebanon—Artillery shelling pounded a southern border village in Lebanon on Sunday, leaving three people dead and forcing panicked families to flee northward along winding mountain roads. The barrage began shortly after dawn, dropping heavy explosive rounds directly into residential areas and agricultural plots surrounding the municipality. Stone houses dating back generations suffered direct hits, collapsing roofs and filling narrow stone alleys with thick plumes of white smoke. Local municipal officials reported that communication lines within the village were severed during the initial wave of impacts, delaying emergency notifications.

Residents remaining in the community took refuge in underground basements and stone cellars as incoming shells continued to fall at irregular intervals throughout the morning hours. Civil protection units stationed in nearby towns found their movement severely restricted by ongoing artillery fire that targeted access roads and agricultural tracks.

"We cannot dispatch heavy recovery vehicles into the zone while artillery rounds are actively landing on the main approach routes," explained regional civil defense officer Charbel Khoury via phone from an operational outpost.

The three fatalities were confirmed by local medical clinics after bodies were transported out of the shelling zone aboard private pickup trucks and local utility vehicles. Several other villagers sustained critical injuries from flying shrapnel and collapsing masonry, overwhelming the limited medical staff operating rural outposts. Power transformers caught fire following electrical short circuits, plunging entire neighborhoods into darkness and disabling local water pumping stations.

Agricultural fields planted with olive trees caught fire from incendiary munitions, sending dark pillars of smoke drifting across the border valley. Farmers abandoned their tractors and livestock, joining the vehicular convoy fleeing toward the safer perimeter of the coastal city of Tyre. Municipal councils in northern districts mobilized empty schools and community centers to register the newly displaced families arriving with few personal belongings.

International peacekeeping forces stationed along the border sector issued formal warnings urging all parties to exercise maximum restraint to prevent further civilian casualties. Observers attempted to broker local ceasefires to allow ambulances safe passage into the heavily bombarded pocket, but shelling persisted intermittently.

Relief organizations coordinated with local mayors to dispatch emergency food and water rations to families sheltering in lower mountain regions outside the immediate impact zone. The local governor's office established a crisis cell to track displacement patterns and coordinate emergency housing logistics for the influx of refugees.

Military patrols maintained checkpoints along the main northern highway to keep traffic flowing smoothly away from the active combat zones. The village streets remain largely deserted as evening approaches, save for stray animals and the smoldering ruins of targeted homes.
