Landslide Disaster Near Kishtwar Hydropower Project Leaves One Dead, One Injured

KISHTWAR, Jammu and Kashmir, India — A landslide triggered by heavy rain struck near a hydropower project site in the Kishtwar district in the early hours of Monday, March 16, 2026, killing one worker and injuring another, officials said.

The incident occurred near the Dangduru area, where a team of workers was caught in the sudden landslide late Sunday night. A project vehicle was buried under debris, trapping two workers. Rescue teams were dispatched quickly, and while one worker was pulled out alive but injured, the other succumbed to his injuries before help could reach him.

Local authorities activated emergency response units as heavy rain and snowfall continued to batter parts of the region. The fire brigade, police, and disaster management teams worked through difficult conditions to reach the site and clear the rubble.

In a related development, more than 230 people, including women and children, were evacuated from the high-altitude Sinthan Top area after they became stranded due to severe snowfall and landslide induced road blockages. A coordinated rescue operation involving the police, army, and civil administration successfully brought the group to safety.

Officials have also ordered the precautionary closure of schools outside the municipal limits in Kishtwar and the neighboring Doda district as the inclement weather persists.

The landslide incident highlights the ongoing challenges posed by extreme weather conditions and rugged terrain in the Himalayan region, where infrastructure development and natural forces often converge with dangerous consequences.
