RODRIGUEZ, RIZAL, Philippines — A long-simmering boundary feud between neighbors boiled over into horrific violence on Tuesday afternoon, June 16, 2026 leaving a local resident severely injured and a father and son behind bars facing frustrated murder charges.
The suspects, identified as 54-year-old Reynaldo Santos Sr. and his 26-year-old son, Reynaldo Santos Jr., were arrested by responding officers shortly after the brutal hacking incident in Barangay San Jose. According to Rodriguez Municipal Police, the victim, 42-year-old construction worker Danilo Macaraeg, was resting on his front porch around 4:30 PM when the suspects confronted him. What began as a heated shouting match over a contested patch of land quickly escalated into a physical altercation.
Witnesses stated that the confrontation turned deadly when Santos Sr. allegedly pinned Macaraeg to the ground while his son, Santos Jr., retrieved a bolo (a traditional Filipino machete) from their home. CCTV footage from a neighboring residence captured the terrifying moments that followed. Santos Jr. can be seen returning to the scene and repeatedly hacking a defenseless Macaraeg. Despite his injuries, Macaraeg attempted to shield his head and torso, which neighbors say ultimately, saved his life.
"Narinig ko na lang po yung sigawan, tapos nakita ko na hinahabol na ng taga. Talagang pinagtulungan nila," (I just heard screaming, and then I saw him being chased and hacked. They really ganged up on him,) a neighbor who requested anonymity recalled.
The assault only ceased when bystanders began throwing rocks at the suspects and shouting that the police had been called, causing the father and son to retreat into their residence.
Local authorities and emergency medical technicians rushed Macaraeg to the Casimiro A. Ynares Sr. Memorial Hospital. Doctors confirmed he sustained deep lacerations to his arms, shoulders, and a defensive wound on his left hand. While his injuries are severe, he is currently in stable condition and expected to survive.
Rodriguez Police tracking teams quickly cordoned off the area and apprehended both suspects at their home without further incident. The blood-stained bolo used in the attack was recovered at the scene. Investigation reveals that the two families had been locked in a bitter land dispute for over three years. The conflict had previously been brought to the local barangay lupon (neighborhood mediation board) multiple times, but no peaceful resolution was ever reached.
Colonel Felipe Enriquez, Chief of the Rodriguez Police, issued a stern warning to the community regarding civil disputes turning violent.
"We heavily discourage our citizens from taking the law into their own hands, especially over property and land issues. There are legal avenues, municipal courts, and barangay mediations to settle these boundaries. Resorting to violence will only destroy lives and land you in jail," Enriquez said.
The Santos father and son duo are currently detained at the Rodriguez Municipal Police Station jail facility. The Rizal Provincial Prosecutor's Office is finalizing the formal filing of frustrated murder charges against both suspects.
