Kolkata Festival Horror: Durga Puja Crowd Crush Kills 17, Injures 25 at Packed Pandal

Kolkata, India— A crowd crush at a Durga Puja pandal in Kolkata killed 17 people and injured 25 others on October 20, after thousands pressed into a narrow entry lane that gave way.

It was peak hour. The pandal, one of the city's largest, had drawn massive crowds since morning. By evening, the queue stretched for half a kilometer. Police had set up metal barricades to control flow. At around 8:30 p.m., those barricades buckled.

People fell. Those behind kept pushing. Witnesses said there was no way to stop. "We were shouting, but no one could hear," said a 28-year-old man who was pulled out by his brother. "The pressure was from all sides. People just collapsed on each other."

The pandal is built on a tight residential plot in north Kolkata. Entry and exit shared the same choked lane. Vendors had set up stalls along the edge, narrowing it further. Two constables assigned to the gate were overwhelmed in minutes. Organizers said they had requested more police.

Seventeen bodies were taken to RG Kar and NRS hospitals. Officials said most deaths were due to asphyxiation and chest compression. Among the dead were four women and three minors. The injured list includes 25, with six in intensive care. A doctor at NRS said, "Several came in without pulse."

Kolkata Police Commissioner said a case has been registered against the puja committee for negligence. "We are examining CCTV footage and the permission papers," he said. Preliminary findings point to overcrowding beyond sanctioned capacity. The committee claimed it had clearance for 5,000 visitors at a time. Police estimate the crowd was triple that.

Durga Puja is not just a festival in Bengal. It is a city-wide movement of people. Every year, millions move between pandals. Crowd management relies on temporary bamboo barriers, volunteers with whistles, and overstretched police units. This year, footfall broke records. Officials had warned of unprecedented crowds.

The state government announced compensation for families of the dead and free treatment for the injured. Chief Minister's office said a committee will audit safety measures at all major pandals. Opposition leaders called the audit too late. They demanded criminal liability.

At midnight, the pandal lights were still on. But the lane was empty. Police stood guard with lathis. Shoes, broken bangles, and torn bags lay scattered inside the barricaded zone. The festival drums had stopped.
