At least 17 people were killed and many others injured in a crowd crush at a Durga Puja event in Kolkata, officials said. The incident occurred at an exit in the Girish Park area as heavy rain prompted worshippers to rush for shelter or leave the venue. West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari said 25 people were being treated for injuries, and a seven-year-old girl was among the dead. Prime Minister Narendra Modi called it tragic and offered support publicly.
