Košice Region House Burns: Fatal Residential Fire Claims Occupant's Life, Leaves Family Devastated, Building Destroyed

Košice, Slovakia— One occupant died after a fatal residential house fire broke out in the Košice region on October 22, 2026.

The fire started at 3:40 a.m. in a single-storey family house in a village near Moldava nad Bodvou, east of Košice. Neighbors woke to the smell of smoke and saw flames through ground-floor windows. The house, built of wood and brick, was fully engulfed within 15 minutes. The roof collapsed.

The house was occupied by a 67-year-old man living alone. His bedroom was near the kitchen where the fire is believed to have started. He did not escape. Fire crews said the front door was locked from inside and windows had security bars.

Volunteer firefighters from the village arrived first with one engine, followed by professional crews from Košice. They found the building already beyond saving and focused on preventing spread to a neighboring barn and house 10 meters away. Water had to be shuttled from a hydrant 300 meters away.

“We had to use breathing apparatus. Inside temperature was extreme. The roof came down before we could search,” said a Košice fire officer. The body was found in the hallway near the exit after the fire was extinguished at 5:30 a.m.

Neighbors said the man lived alone after his wife died last year and heated with a solid fuel stove. One said, “We heard the dog barking, then saw fire. We tried to break the window but smoke was too thick.” The dog also died in the fire.

Police have sealed the site. Forensic fire investigators will examine the stove, chimney and electrical wiring. Initial theory is an overheated stove or chimney soot ignition, common in older rural houses at the start of heating season.

The municipality has offered support to relatives. The house is destroyed and will be demolished. The mayor said, “This is a tragedy for a small village. Everyone knew him.”

The investigation remains open. A post-mortem will confirm cause of death, presumed smoke inhalation.
