Kingston, Jamaica— A gang-related shooting outside a nightclub in Kingston left four people dead and six others injured on October 20, after gunmen opened fire on a crowd gathered near the entrance late at night.
The shooting occurred at around 1:30 a.m. in the New Kingston entertainment district. The club, packed for a weekend event, had a line outside. Witnesses said two men on a motorcycle rode past, then turned and began shooting. Others joined from a car parked across the street. Patrons dived to the ground. Music kept playing inside for several seconds before someone cut it.
Four people were pronounced dead at the scene. Six injured were taken to Kingston Public Hospital and University Hospital of the West Indies. Doctors said two are in critical condition with chest wounds. Police said the victims include both patrons and bystanders, aged between 20 and 34. No children were among them. The gunmen fled toward Half Way Tree Road.
Kingston has been grappling with a surge in gang violence linked to turf battles over extortion and drug sales. The Jamaica Constabulary Force said the nightclub sits near a contested boundary between two gangs. The attack appears to have targeted individuals inside the line, but bystanders were hit. A senior officer said, "This was a planned hit. The shooters did not care who else was there."
The area was cordoned off until morning. Forensic teams collected more than 40 spent casings, mostly from 9mm pistols and one assault rifle. Security footage from the club shows the gunmen wearing masks. The club's owner said he had requested police presence on weekends due to prior threats. He said only two officers were assigned.
Residents said they heard rapid gunfire and screaming. One woman who lives above a shop across from the club said she saw people running in all directions. "We are used to gunshots, but this was different. It did not stop," she said. Vendors who sell food outside the club at night said business has become dangerous.
The government announced increased patrols in New Kingston. The Ministry of National Security said a task force will review nightclub security and licensing. Jamaica's homicide rate remains one of the highest in the world, with more than 1,400 murders last year, many linked to gangs. A state of emergency was declared in parts of Kingston earlier this year.
By morning, the club's entrance was stained with blood. Police kept onlookers back. The six injured remain in hospital. No arrests have been announced.
