Katraj Horrors: 17-Year-Old Brutally Hacked to Death by Armed Gang of Seven in Pune

PUNE, INDIA — A horrific act of violence shattered the peace of Pune’s Katraj area late Monday night, July 20, 2026, after a 17-year-old boy was brutally ambushed and hacked to death by a group of seven attackers. Armed with sickles (billhooks) and iron rods, the gang launched a relentless assault on the minor over a bitter, long-running dispute.

The tragedy unfolded around 10:00 PM near Katraj Lake. The victim and a friend had gone to a local shop to collect a repaired mobile phone when the rival group intercepted them near the Katraj Katta Hotel. Realizing the imminent danger, the teenager attempted to flee, but the attackers ruthlessly pursued him.

According to the Bharti Vidyapeeth police, the suspects had been tracking the victim's movements and accosted him the moment he arrived at the eatery. In a matter of seconds, the gang struck the boy nearly 30 times with sharp weapons and iron rods, inflicting catastrophic, deep injuries to his head, face, chest, and hands before fleeing the scene. Local residents quickly alerted the authorities, and the severely injured youth was rushed to a nearby private hospital and later referred to Sassoon General Hospital, where he was tragically declared dead during treatment.

Investigators have revealed that the horrific killing was the culmination of an ongoing gang rivalry between school dropouts. Both the deceased teenager and the accused had prior criminal records involving serious offenses.

"Murder is the outcome of the previous enmity between them," stated Mansingh Patil, Senior Police Inspector at the Bharti Vidyapeeth Police Station.

Police reports indicate that the victim had six cases of serious bodily offenses registered against him since 2023, and had reportedly assaulted the rival group members on several occasions a few months prior. The suspects had allegedly been plotting their revenge for three to four months. The victim's parents also confirmed to the police that the group had previously issued death threats to their son.

Following a complaint filed by Ganesh Chavan, a friend who witnessed the ambush, the Bharti Vidyapeeth police quickly registered a case under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) for murder, rioting, and unlawful assembly, alongside sections of the Arms Act.

Law enforcement moved swiftly, detaining four minor boys in connection with the murder by Tuesday morning, while launching a massive manhunt to locate the remaining three suspects.

However, the police response has also sparked a wave of local controversy. On Tuesday afternoon, police personnel tied three of the detained minor suspects to the bonnet of a police vehicle and paraded them through the streets of Katraj, using a loudspeaker to tell residents they had no reason to fear the gang. Videos of the public parade and an incident where a woman openly beat the detained minors surfaced heavily on social media. Addressing the severe breach of protocol, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Zone II) Milind Mohite stated that an official inquiry has been ordered against the personnel involved, promising strict further action.
