Amman, Jordan—A multi-vehicle collision on the Desert Highway killed six people today, once again highlighting safety concerns on the country’s main north-south transit route. The accident occurred near the Qatraneh area, involving two transport trucks and several passenger cars. Highway patrol units and medical teams remain at the scene managing the aftermath.

The collision happened during a period of high midday traffic, causing an immediate pileup that blocked both southbound lanes. The force of the impact crushed two passenger vehicles between the larger commercial transport trucks. Emergency workers had to use specialized hydraulic cutting tools to extract the victims from the wreckage.

The Jordan News Agency, Petra, reported that six individuals were declared dead at the scene by responding medical officers. Several other passengers sustained injuries of varying severity and were rushed to the Karak Government Hospital for emergency treatment. Traffic was backed up for several kilometers as a result of the blockage.

External patrol units immediately began redirecting light traffic onto desert sidetracks to relieve the gridlock. Heavy transport vehicles were forced to wait as heavy cranes were brought in to lift the damaged trucks. Road conditions and excessive speed are being investigated as primary factors in the crash.

The Desert Highway has long been a source of concern for Jordanian motorists due to heavy freight traffic and sections of uneven pavement. Despite recent government renovation projects, certain stretches remain hazardous, particularly during peak transit hours. Witnesses at the scene described a sudden loss of control by one of the freight trucks, which then swerved into oncoming traffic. The mechanical state of the commercial vehicles involved will be analyzed by highway safety inspectors. The names of the deceased are being withheld pending notification of their families.

Civil defense rescue operations concluded by late afternoon, but the highway remains partially obstructed. Debris, shattered glass, and spilled fuel cover the roadway, requiring specialized cleanup crews to secure the asphalt before lanes can fully reopen. The police have launched a formal inquiry into the exact cause of the pileup.

The Ministry of Public Works has not issued a statement regarding the current safety conditions of this specific highway sector. Motorists are being advised to exercise extreme caution when approaching the Qatraneh transit corridor. The flow of traffic is expected to remain restricted well into the night.
