Johannesburg, South Africa— Shots were fired outside a convenience store on the edge of Soweto at 11:15 a.m. Tuesday, killing a man at the doorway and sending shoppers diving for cover.
Gauteng police said two armed men approached on foot as the victim left the store with groceries. One suspect drew a pistol and fired at close range, hitting the victim in the head and chest. The pair then grabbed a bag the victim was carrying and fled toward a waiting car.
The victim, a 29-year-old resident of the area, died at the scene. Paramedics confirmed death before police arrived. The bag was later found empty two streets away, suggesting robbery was the motive.
"The man just came out, then bang bang. Everyone ran inside. The shop closed shutters," said the store owner, who watched from behind the counter. He said the store has been robbed twice in the past six months.
Crime scene technicians recovered four 9mm casings near the entrance. The store’s CCTV captured the suspects in hooded tops and masks. The getaway vehicle was a silver Toyota Corolla with no plates visible.
Gauteng SAPS spokesperson Captain Thandi Molefe said a murder and armed robbery docket has been opened. "We have good images. We are checking linked robberies in this corridor. Community members who saw the car can call anonymously," Molefe said.
The area has seen a spike in storefront robberies tied to SASSA grant payout days. Community policing forums have asked for more visible patrols around convenience stores and ATMs.
Residents gathered as the body was covered with a blanket. A local pastor prayed at the scene. The store remained closed for the rest of the day while forensic teams worked.
Police set up roadblocks on two exit routes and searched nearby informal dwellings. No arrests had been made by late afternoon.
Detectives plan to release stills from CCTV on Wednesday and are cross-checking with recent robbery reports in Orlando and Dobsonville.
