Johannesburg, South Africa— An armed robbery at a jewelry market in central Johannesburg turned into fatal gunfire at 11:48 a.m. on October 30, 2026, after a group of robbers opened fire while fleeing with trays of goods.
The attack hit the Jewel City market complex on Fox Street, a busy hub for small traders and gold buyers. Four men entered two adjoining stalls, drew pistols, and forced traders to the floor. They smashed display cases and loaded bags with jewelry and cash.
A private security guard challenged them at the exit. The robbers shot him. He died at the scene. A second guard returned fire, hitting one robber. The wounded robber was dragged away by his crew into a waiting white Toyota Quantum.
“It was chaos. People were diving under tables,” said trader Sipho Dlamini, who hid in a back room. “We heard at least eight shots. Then screaming.”
News24 reported two shoppers were struck by stray rounds. One suffered a leg wound. The other was grazed on the arm. Paramedics treated them inside the market while police cleared the building floor by floor.
Police sealed Fox and Sauer Streets. Forensic teams marked bullet casings near the main entrance and collected blood samples from the pavement where the wounded robber fell. The getaway vehicle was later found abandoned in Hillbrow with jewelry boxes inside.
Jewel City has been hit three times in the past year. Traders said security is thin and cameras are outdated. The market association said it had asked for a permanent police post after the last robbery in August. The request was still pending.
“We have launched a manhunt and we are reviewing all camera footage from the precinct,” said Gauteng police spokesperson Colonel Noxolo Kweza. “We believe this gang is linked to other commercial robberies in the CBD.”
Tonight the market remains closed and under guard. Traders are counting losses and waiting for clearance to retrieve stock. The wounded guard’s family has been notified. No arrests have been made.
