Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi sent a masakaki offering to Tokyo’s Yasukuni Shrine on Saturday, October 17, at the start of its three-day autumn festival. She made the offering in her official capacity, following a practice used by previous prime ministers. Takaichi is expected to skip visiting the shrine during the festival. The shrine honors Japan’s war dead, including leaders convicted of war crimes after World War II, and remains a source of diplomatic friction with China and South Korea.
