Jakarta, Indonesia— Four employees were killed when a boiler exploded inside a factory in Jakarta's eastern industrial zone on Saturday morning. The blast ripped through the production floor at around 9:30 a.m., blowing out walls and starting a fire that burned for an hour.
The factory makes packaging materials and employs more than 200 workers. According to workers who escaped, the boiler had shown pressure irregularities earlier in the week. Maintenance was called. The machine kept running. On Saturday, a loud hiss turned into a deafening bang.
The force threw metal fragments across two buildings. Workers near the boiler were killed instantly. Others were hit by flying debris or knocked down by the shockwave. The roof collapsed in one section. Smoke filled the complex. Sirens from inside mixed with alarms.
"We heard a roar, then everything shook," said a line worker who was on break outside. "People ran. Some without shoes. The fire came fast. We could not go back for our friends." He said the emergency exit at the back was blocked by pallets.
Firefighters from three stations responded. They found the boiler room completely destroyed. Bodies were recovered under collapsed concrete. Paramedics treated at least six injured workers on site. Two were taken to Cakung General Hospital with severe burns.
The company management said in a short statement that it was cooperating with authorities. The Ministry of Manpower dispatched inspectors to seal the site. Police said they will question the plant manager, safety officer, and maintenance contractor. The boiler's certification and last inspection date are now under review.
Labor unions said this was not an isolated case. Jakarta's industrial zones house thousands of aging boilers. Inspections are infrequent. Workers often lack training on high-pressure systems. Pressure to meet output targets pushes factories to skip shutdowns.
Relatives waited outside the factory gate all afternoon. One woman said her brother, 27, had worked there for three years. She had not heard from him. Officials later confirmed he was among the dead. The list of victims was posted at the gate at 5 p.m.
Tonight the factory remains cordoned off. Forensic teams are still inside. Officials have not yet cleared the adjacent units to reopen.
